Making friends can be a challenging experience, but it’s also one of the most rewarding things we can do. A robust social support system can provide companionship, laughter, and emotional support during difficult times. But as we get older, making friends as an adult seems to get harder and harder.

I remember, when I used to go to the park as a child, the easiest thing in the world was finding a friend. I would walk up to someone, ask them if they wanted to play on the swings, and before I knew it we were having the times of our lives. Why can’t it be that simple again?
Where Is The Science?
I always try to back whatever I say with imperial evidence, and this was no different. Even though I know the benefit of having friends as an adult or a “tribe”. I always like something that can back my claims.
According to the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology, same-sex friendships during stressful situations have been known to reduce stress, hostility, fear, and anxiety!!! I knew those Wine paint parties had a purpose, but now I have science to back my fun!
Making friends may not be as easy as it used to be, but it’s not as difficult as you think!
If you’re struggling to make friends, don’t worry, you’re not alone! Here are some tips that can help you build meaningful and lasting friendships:
Be Yourself
It’s important to be true to yourself when making new friends. Don’t try to be someone you’re not or pretend to like something you don’t. When you’re authentic, you’re more likely to attract people who share your values and interests. As an added bonus, They like you for YOU!
Join Groups or Clubs
Find groups or clubs that share your interests and attend their events or meetings. This can be a great way to meet like-minded people you can connect with. I attend a local women’s group in my town when I can. I love meeting other women and learning new things. Plus, there is something about being with another woman that is just so soothing. Sister tribes are REAL!
Attend Social Events
Attend social events like parties, networking events, or even local festivals. This can be a great way to meet new people and expand your social circle. Many times, the calling of our comfy bed or Netflix can keep us from getting up and heading out to social events; get out there and have a good time!

Volunteer
Volunteering for a cause you are passionate about can be a great way to meet new people who share your values.
Take a Class
Take a class in a subject you are interested in, such as cooking or photography. This can be a great way to meet people who have similar interests and learn something new!
Schedule a Play Date
If you have children, you know how many playdates kids get invited to. Get together with those moms over wine and cheese (yum). Discuss your triumphs, struggles, and tips. I love the mom squad!

Be Open and Approachable
Make an effort to smile and make eye contact with people you meet. Ladies, sometimes we don’t even realize when we have a bitch face on. A nasty look on your face warns everyone to stay away. Be open to starting a conversation and don’t be afraid to introduce yourself and SMILE.
Use Social Media
Duh! you are probably already doing this but, connect with people on social media who you have common interests with. Attend virtual events or join online communities that interest you. If you are ready and comfortable, meet a group in person for a museum walk or a paint party. Whatever tickles your fancy.

Attend a Workout Class
Join a gym or attend a workout class in your area. No, not only in January, lol. This can be a great way to meet people who share your interest in fitness and wellness.
Join a Book Club
Join a local book club or start one of your own. This can be a great way to connect with people who share your love of reading and literature. I used to love reading wellness and health books and I connected with different people through that.
Attend a Concert or Music Festival
Attend a concert or music festival of your favorite band or artist. This can be a great way to connect with people who share your taste in music. Do you remember how much fun it was to go out and dance like no one was watching?
Just Be You
Remember, making new friends takes time and effort, but it can be a rewarding experience that can bring joy and fulfillment to your life. Keep an open mind and be patient, and you will eventually find the right people to connect with.
In addition to these tips, it’s important to prioritize self-care and self-love. When we feel good about ourselves, we are more likely to attract positive people into our lives. Take time to do things that make you happy, pursue your passions, and prioritize your mental and physical health.
So, take a deep breath, put yourself out there, and trust that the right people will come into your life!
