Is Amber Heard The Victim of Social Media Bullying?

The past two weeks have been one of the most intriguing in the courtroom, on social media, and in the court of public opinion. The Johnny Depp and Amber Heard trial took on a life of its own- It was the 6-week trial that was seen around the world!

Needless to say, I was also transfixed by this court battle (after work of course). It may have been the underlying issues of mental health and substance abuse that got me hooked. But it was also a case of physical, mental, and emotional abuse that is so intertwined with many mental health struggles.

However, what cannot be denied was that in the age of social media, the case took on a life of its own.

The Amber Heard and Johnny Depp Trial was TV and YouTube GOLD.

Putting all that aside, was justice NOT served for Amber Heard? When the trial started about 6 weeks ago, Johnny Depp had to prove that Ambar Heard defamed him by writing an Op-ed in the Washington post (link).

Many Thought He Had A Slim Chance of Winning The Case

Everyone believed that Johnny Depp would lose and Amber would win. It also appeared that the media was on her side. As the case began, individuals and social media started voicing their opinions on inconsistencies in the case and who they believed was lying.

This Could Be the Future of Televised Trials.

The jury made the final decision and found Amber Heard guilty of Defaming Johnny Depp. She will have to pay him 10,350,000. Johnny Depp will have to pay 2 Million based on his former lawyer ( Adam Waldman) comments regarding Amber Heard, in which the court stated Adam defamed Amber Heard

After the case, Amber Heard’s lawyer Elaine Bredehoft went on numerous news channels explaining their loss and hopes to appeal.

While this blog post does not address any particular issue or problem, I wanted to show how in the age of social media, even televised court trials have changed the landscape of how people express themselves.
